Uh, I have Adblock off for all improbableisland pages on my Chrome. The thumbs-up is on a green stop sign. Except, I still don't see any advertisements. Which are the ad-enabled skins? Every couple months I switch between the different colors of the Default setup, but I don't see the ads on Console or Classic either.

EDIT: Oh, I'm an idiot who doesn't read the MotD enough.

I guess while I'm still here, I'll give my viewpoint:

Sure, this sounds fine. The relationship that the players have with the developer is what makes me stick around and help out. I'll be donating another $10 in a couple weeks, simply because CMJ needs it and I've gotten lots of pleasure from his work. If we had no shinies to spend that SP on, I'd still do it.

I really like the fact that the ad skin will be opt-in, but since I wouldn't be the forum contrarian without giving some dissenting opinion, I think even the new players who come in should by default have to opt in to ads. I might change my tune when I see the ads (I understand they'll be static, but still), because I really really really liked the cleanliness of a site with no ads. It's not only a cleaner page, it's technically a safer page.

I'm going to switch to an ad-supporting skin because I want to support the game, and I think it would be better if default players had that option. Then again, it might be a big stink about nothing, and it turns out that making the game ad-supported with no opt-out at all would still be fine. I admit that static ads which clash with the page still don't really cause me any trouble on any site... but then again, I browse with Adblock and No-Script.

I just wanted to add to the general consensus and say THANK YOU. I very very much appriciate on my crappy computer not only that you chose non-flash, easy load ads,*but to make them OPTIONAL for those who's crappy boxes can't handle much and play the Island BECAUSE it's a steamlined and loads.

I really can't do much with my computer which has driven me from a lot of websites who regularly 'update' their sites to all flash, hi-res, and general unnecessary bullshit. But the Island is a beautiful, user-friendly site that never stops amazing me. I wish more websites followed CMJ's example, then the internet might be a better place.

That being said, I'm going to chuck a few more bucks at you when I get paid again... This is the only website I've ever donated money to. I could never in my life justify buying expendable 'virtual' objects, or paying subscriptions to a game. This is the only one that's worth the money they OPTIONALLY ask for.

Good luck CMJ, we're all rooting for you.

*And hopefully/most likely no porn.

I just noticed that the site which is currently advertising on the island has, on it's own page, an advertisement for the island. Now, on to the currently-cheap shenanigans!

Must have been one of my campaigns - they advertise automatically in bursts of an hour or so.

Excitingly, three people so far have signed up to Project Wonderful through my affiliate link, which is awesome! I get three per cent of what they spend. Smile

My computer's an ancient, doddering beast and it doesn't play well with moving objects anymore, so can I just second TeddybearofDeath's comment about static, non-irritating ads? The ad skin's much nicer than I was actually expecting--it doesn't even look that different from the regular Island. I'll just keep using it. I would love if there were a turquoise ad skin, though! I'm not in a position to donate, unfortunately, but I'll certainly click on the ads and check out some webcomics until I am.

Yeah! I've got the ad skin on right now, and it's not botheringmy piece of crap compy at all! Island loads as fast as ever, and I'm so far experiencing no problems. Glad to say this is no burden. Thank goodness!

Wait, I have one question! This chart shows top referrers to Improbable Island. The first being the IP number of Improbable Island. What does that mean? Do they count it separately?

Blue and purple too! I change up the colors every couple month, and I'd love to move off of red. I had spent months on that and just recently switched to blue, but the ad skin puts me back to red.

I love colors, too! I was on gold before.

I'm sure there's going to be an ad version of every skin color, right?

Right?

(also, while we're on the topic, what's the chances of a Silver skin to accompany the Gold one? I use Gold now, but I'd use Silver. That would be awesome.)

Ummm, I have no complaints and fully support this, though I do have an inquiry... Why not put an advertisement in the enquirer too?

Or ... perhaps lots of Islanders clicking on the Project Wonderful link under the ad to see what it's all about? Like I did.

Just a thought.

Seconded, and it is Ad-Supported! Which by the way has had some fascinating ads/links.

On this subject, please could you say what exception filters to use so that the adverts definitely show? I currently use Adblock to hide the header and footer, just to somewhat reduce the amount of scrolling I need to do to see my buffs etc.

Thanks to Ada, I found out that it is possible to have Adblock enabled to hide the images I want to not be taking up page space, but to still have the ads showing to support the Island, without needing any exception filters. (Sadly I'm not quite sure how I've managed to do it - first I whitelisted Improbable Island, and then today I experimentally re-enabled Adblock to hide the compass.png, bottom-center.png and bottom.png, and found that the ads do still get through.)

I'd be happier if the ads were at the bottom of the page instead of in the header, since that's taking up the first 3cm of my 17cm-tall screen, but I can definitely live with it! A bit of scrolling won't kill me - I'd far rather that Improbable Island continued to be a viable career-employer-job-etc for CMJ and hence a playable game for all us addicts.

Oh, and, another vote of +1 awesomeness for the Black skin.

Oh, is it too late to request an ad-supported console skin?
