I would pull for gambling.

If you've ever played Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, they invented their own little gambling game. I don't actually remember how it's played or what it's called, but I do remember that there were parts where it really did matter what sort of cards you had. Might make a deeper version of that...

I think it's called Sabacc. I feel so ashamed to know that.

I, a Star Wars nerd, scoff at your supposed shame!

Also, it's Pazaak, it's kind of like black jack with bonus cards you use to change your total value--and you guys have convinced me to do this cancer curing thing, and I tend to leave my computer on all day long, so it should be a nice amount of CPU cycles going Smile

Multiple-round games don't really work well in a non-realtime setting. Games go on forever, you've got to be sure that the person you're challenging is logged in and ready, and during the time it takes for you to run through multiple rounds, someone else could challenge you - it gets complicated and tedious. It's got to run something like this:

1. Player A arranges his cards and forms a hand.
1a. [The game code takes the "hand" cards out of Player A's deck and puts them in storage, effectively locking them - they can't be traded, sold, or used to challenge other players]
2. Player A challenges player B.
2a. If Player B does not respond in a timely manner, Player A can cancel the challenge and unlock his cards.
3. Player B arranges his cards.
4. Player B accepts the challenge.
4a. [The game code checks that Player A hasn't backed out of the challenge!]
5. [The game code runs the card battle, determines results, and then redistributes, returns and unlocks the cards. This all has to happen in a single page load. Allowing a player to interfere halfway through will open things up for all sorts of headaches.]

So, if we're going for a card game of some sort, the limitations of PHP mean it's got to be one based around strategy rather than tactics. The players have to decide what they're doing before the game is started and before they see the other player's hand. The actual mechanics of the rules can be tweaked and altered and even changed completely - but we've got to stick with the "One round of decisions from both players, then the server decides who wins" model.

This is why you can't do, for example, realtime PvP - it sounds awesome, but when you realise that you'll spend half the fight refreshing the screen to see if the other player has played their turn yet, it quickly loses its appeal.

Hmm.. what if Starter packs were available for purchase with WCG tokens in New home, but each Outpost had unique cards available at their 'WCG Tourney' huts?

Is it too late for me to join in? I caved in and decided to install on Windows. Would I still get credit for whatever? Or will the entire island get the same thing?

You're good, we're all getting the donator points. This is a discussion about possible future rewards.

I see. I hate my laptop sometimes. I only have 443 MB of RAM to use in total, and my desktop isn't connected to the Internet.

Only 443mb?

Only four hundred and forty-three megabytes?

Luxury.

And yeah, start racking up WCG points now. The way I've got the interface script set up, you'll get all of those points the first time you visit the Hippy Hut.

I'll just have to boot up into Windows real quick. I use Ubuntu mostly.

There's something I'm not getting. My statistics say my total run time has been about six hours, but my computer's been on since about noon EST.

Stats are updated once per 24 hours, and total run time doesn't actually mean total run time.

Super bump for justice!

We haven't been using the grid for even a year as a team and we've done 44 years of work! This is amazing, and let's keep going strong!

I was just thinking about this today.
Wondering if the Hippyhut is going to be making a comeback.

Hey, anyone who's on a university internet network found a problem with WCG not finding the network? I had it running all summer at home, but now it can't find the internet, despite the fact that I'm clearly connected. Any ideas?

Well, I know our local university restricts what types of information can be run through its proxy servers - not to censor people, but to stop them playing Warcrack on university bandwidth. If you know any helpful IT people, they might be able to recommend some settings that you can change.
