I'm getting very curious as to what happens when the defenses are breeched. I'm in favor of letting some carefully selected outpost go down to better learn what we're up against.
- We can't let Kittania or Pleasantville fail -- the food is too good.
- Improbable Central has to stay up -- we need the Spiderkitty.
- Cyber City has the only mini-quest available with the Abandoned Factory -- it has to stay.
- Squat Hole has the Midget Massage, Skronky Pot, and Tynan's Gym -- a full day of fun.
- Ace high? Three words: 'Cake or Death'.
- I wouldn't miss New Home -- but where would all the rookies go?
That leaves New Pitt. All it has is the Zombie Donkey, and one of those will last you forever.
Why not CyberCity?
The only unique thing it has is the Factory, and more often than not you die in it.
Sure, it provides req and cigs, but you can get those in the Haunted House (or whatever it's called) in New Pittsburg... oh, wait, that's gone.
Well, it still has Brains! and the mount...
Ahh, screw it, Sacrifice it!
I myself am very curious about what would happen, and would really like to see from the inside. However, talky is currently questing in Pittsburgh, and is far too stubborn a one to let that happen while she can still lift her gun.
And we could try asking CMJ, but if he's gone to all the trouble of coding it, is he really gonna tell us?
Something will probably fall on its own eventually. No reason to purposefully sacrifice something, is there? Let's not be hasty!
Ah, but;
If one will probably fall, why not one of our choosing?
And if we abandon one, then there will be more defenders for the rest, so less chance of the others falling as well!
Only way we're gonna find out what happens is to have an outpost fall. If we act now, we can do it under controlled conditions and isolate any damage. If we wait, the first failure will come at a random site and we'll be playing catch-up.
We don't know what will happen to quests, to the race from that outpost, to the long-term health of the outpost itself. Maybe it will be a disaster, maybe it will be laughable. Either way, I wanna find out!
Let's play the game, people -- don't let the game play us.
I'm not too sure that this would be the best option. Unless it's absolutely necessary to let an Outpost fall, it would be foolish to lose it when we could have kept it safe. It seems to me that we're surviving quite well with these Invasions, and we'll be able to keep every Outpost safe if we band together.
My guess as to what will happen, for what it's worth, is that all the businesses disappear - and that's about it. Pain in the arse, especially for zombies who have to wait for their masters to come and hunt them down. If the place starts getting built up again, then they'll reappear. I see no good reason why quest monsters shouldn't still be huntable.
But that's only a guess, what do I know really?
Another hypothesis would be that jungle creatures would blend into the outpost in an attempt to live like the civilans. Hungry, feral civilians; yep, that's the regular nondescript zombie.
Or they'd just build another haunted house runned by them. That'd be nice. Too nice for most of them, but still, we are on Improbable Island after all.
We need more crazy theories about a New Pittsburgh filled with (more) monsters!
Is a crazy personage that may or may not utter wise stuff.
Doing it, "Just cos' it's going to happen sooner or later, so we can control when it happens" doesn't make much sense either. Whether you control what happens or not, the effects are going to be the same, and regardless of warnings and whatnot, some people aren't going to know what's going on. (Some people don't read the Enquirer, some don't read chat spaces.)
Pity the one who plays the game not to roleplay but to play the game who is inattentive and a zombie. I figure the banks and restaurants close, leaving you without access to food or your money. (Or more importantly for those earlier DK characters, a safe place to put your money.)
Strategically, it's an illogical idea. S'like letting the enemy into a fort to see how badly they'll fuck it up so we know for "future reference."
You'll find out sooner or later when people get more careless about their defending of the outposts.
I'm normally one of the "Oooh...What's this button do?" types, but as a citizen of the island, I won't stand idly by and let an oupost fall. Then the monsters win. Do what you will, I'll stand alone against the hordes if I have to.

To me, playing the game involves experiencing at least *some* factors beyond our control. Otherwise we're just wanking about with lines of code. Where's the fun in that?
Anyway if it turns out we're just too damn good at defending outposts, I have no doubt Joe will be kind enough to quadruple the difficulty of the task for us with little or no warning.

I'm with Bake. But if a city were to have be sacrificed, I'd sacrifice 404. But thats just me. I think at some point a city will fall, its just going to happen. Im a curious sort, but not that curious.

Hear, hear! I'll be right beside you - or right beside you in spirit while fighting at one of the other outposts under attack.

Exactly!
Joe didn't write all that code to have it never execute. It is going to happen -- the only questions are when and where. I'd rather have control over that than leave it random.
