As the title says. We've had a little time to get used to Places and experiment, so what have people come up with? In particular, how have you been using programming?

Before the fact I was banging on about how I was going to do my Puzzle Place. Well I haven't. Or to be strictly honest, I've built some rooms for it, ready for when I'm going to get stuck in, but I haven't decorated them or plumbed then up with doors. I'm still at the design and planning stage. A lot more work needs to be done on that before I start building it properly.

I've been doing what I suspect a few other large Place builders* have been doing. Rebuilding my Place, and starting to play with programs, to get the hang of them properly. Great fun.

First I started connecting a few rooms up that I couldn't do with Dwellings due to lack of cross-link abilities. Great!

Then I started playing with having different room descriptions depending on where you enter from. (So for example if you slide down the wet slide into the pool at the bottom, it says something along the lines of "Whee! Splash!" with heavy rain backdrop. If instead you climb down into it, then it says something appropriate and has a light rain backdrop.) Fantastic, it always annoyed me when a room described you going into it, then you went further, came back and entered the room from the wrong end.)

Then of course, a little program in the main hall that makes a note of anybody who comes in. (Isn't that wonderful! You can actually see who's coming to visit, even if they don't say anything when they're there!)

Now I've just finished putting in a dial (several in fact, all connected). When you're in a room with a dial, you can see where it's pointing to, or twist it round to a new setting. Then the doors out will lead to different rooms depending on the dial setting. All good fun.

I've got some other ideas that I'm playing with, rooms that will send you to random parts of the Mansions for example, conversations with characters, and a few other things.

So what have you been up to then?

This is your big chance to show off your fancy new Place. If you intrigue me sufficiently, then you'll have my name come up on the list of memory settings. Won't that be exciting! Well tell me about it anyway then.

Due to a retail sales schedule, I'm taking the "throw shit at the wall and see what sticks" method of figuring out what I'm doing/how programming works.

Decided I'm going to mostly take a classic text-adventure style with it, with plenty of pages (and some rooms) that will only show (some will even only unlock) if you type in certain key words and phrases.
(i.e., "TURN DOORKNOB" will unlock a locked door. Not that I added that in, but just as an example.)

Incidentally, I'm now somehwere around lvl 30 in scrap scavenging, and it has taken about that long to collect more than four "look for command" contraptions. @_@

I'm also going to have a bit of weather recognition running so the outdoor portions (rooms) will have the same weather as the outside game and still feel like the jungle/traveling, some pages that only come up upon race recognition and/or DK amount in there, as well as a bit of give/take Memento. There will even be one room that will toss you to random rooms in the Place every time you type any of a short list of commands, and another room that will only ever appear at a specific game time of day.

I think I have my work cut out for me....

I'm in the "build a shitload of rooms" stage. Between queues and finished jobs, I've got 100 rooms set up at the cliffside shack so far. Which is only the tip of the iceberg, but I'm trying not to get too terribly far ahead of myself.

The general plan is to build a Complex underneath the bar, consisting of six sectors - Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon and Omega:

Alpha - Thirteen floors of scientific research facilities including but not limited to Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, and Improbability.

Beta - Typical biodome. Nothing special planned for this (yet) aside from colourful text and scenery.

Gamma - Arctic research centre. The word 'arctic' here means only that it's buried beneath the mountains of CC404 and extremely frigid, nothing more. Again, nothing too out of the ordinary planned for this just yet.

Delta - Deep sea habitat. This one is slightly more fleshed out than the previous two, due to its nature and similarity to the next sector...

Epsilon - What I commonly refer to as 'The orbital elevator and attached space station'. It's actually going to be a great deal more than that, including 'space' rooms, a lunar station, colonies and... well, it's an open-ended dwelling at this point. I'll probably drop a tube into a black hole at some point for the hell of it. And before you say "But LT, how can any of this exist outside of the improbability bubble?", all of this is made possible by a multitude of Improbability field generators and amplifiers.

Omega - Basically a geothermal powerplant and research station... built inside the Earth's core. Similar concept as Epsilon (i.e. 'core crafts' that could explore the mantle and discover crystal caves and whatnot).

The bar itself consists of (not surprisingly) a barroom, several guest rooms, an attic, a rooftop terrace for dining, a wine cellar / workshop, a cave system, a summer villa built into the side of the cliff, and a few other random rooms.

... I've been working on the bar for about a year now, and I've yet to finish the first sector. It will happen, though.

I hit a bit of a creative block in my Place, but I plan to get back to it.

I have a receptionist in the Lobby who will be handing out pamphlets when I write the memento.

Then, the plan is to have a locked door that you can inspect in one room, get a tip to go back to the receptionist for more info, and via Memory there will be a new selection available when you talk to the receptionist. This unlocks the door. (or I could make that a new option... "Yes, I'm interested!" "No, I'm not interested." ack!)

The block came about when I started working on this, realizing how many more pages I needed to build, write, and program. At first it was simple, then it seemed to get more and more complicated. I haven't quite figured out a good way to plan these things yet... I used a single Google Doc the first time around for Dwellings, now I feel like I need a map, text files, and spreadsheets! Laughing Out Loud

And this doesn't even scratch the surface of the judgmental NPC bartender I want to program, the surprise guest, or the casino! Cry

I.... haven't? I'm still working on he first room of my dwelling (cuting and placing the stone allone takes over ten gamedays worth in stamina you know, and then you get the wood, and decos, and all the bleedin' traveling..)

But i'm sure i'll build up enough supplies some day to actually use them barn raiser for more than two rooms and a door...

Not a problem if you have enough chronos and plenty of req. With mutant steaks and noodly noodles or energy drinks, plus the double bed I have, plus my regular bonuses, I can start on a good day with roughly 400% stam... and I'm only on my second DK. Brews and the Haiks help too, as do OSTs and train passes. All of this means an average of 800 logs and 400 stone in one game day, and then another game day to actually use the supplies. Total cost:

stam: ~600-800%
req: ~150000
time: 2 game days / up to 8 hours realtime
money: 5 USD / 500 DP (two individual brews)

That's the equivalent of roughly 12 new rooms, or a variety of other job combinations. I'm sure you already knew all of this, though. Wink Happy building!

So cool! Also: how did you program the "little program in the main hall that makes a note of anybody who comes in", Hairy Mary?

very easily. You install a memory, and then put a program in the main hall with an "add one to memory" contraption in it.

This will *gasp* add one to the memory every time that said person enters the main hall (or any other room where you put it, I'm using different slots for different rooms so I can see where people are going.

To then see this information, click on "Programs" (Under 'keybearer options') then on "Edit Place Memories" and then on "View Player Records" and you get a nice list of the value of this memory for everybody who's interacted with it.

I've got my Tree planted and grown, I've put up my Flet, and the nest, and my private hollow, and now a portal has opened to a different place very far away. I will keep my Place large with plenty of places to sleep. At the same time I'll open more areas for exploration through the Portal. I have a very hard time with Programs because even when I follow the directions properly I still don't get any difference in my background. Could be my browser but I'm not sure.

Ah. That was me before I was reborn. My tree is planted and my flet is built and there is now a portal to go to somewhere else and even a secret warp back to another room in the beginning. I'm currently working on my castle though, have about 25 rooms and am saving for beds. I want to do something really cool with it, not sure what yet, but at least I have characters you can (kind of) talk to. On to mastering memories.
