But I built one anyway. That sank into the swamp. But I built another one. That one fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the third one, this one has stood for years.

They tell me it's against the rules. But what happens when all the fairy-tale creatures need a place to crash for a night or two when Squat Hole is attacked?

Maybe Improbable Island is no place for an ogre anyway.

I still have a lot to learn.

In answer to your question, I'm afraid it's either sleep in the swamp (something an Ogre is surely equipped for), or walk a couple of map squares to a nearby dwelling and hope you don't get boated en-route.

As an overconfident Ogre-newbie, I can say I'm equipped to do anything.
Swamp-building is a skill that hasn't been invented yet. I don't expect it to happen overnight.

Oh, no, it isn't an noninvented skill. Suzie just won't let you. As Hairy Mary once said, the Skronky family decided they wanted their Outpost, SquatHole, to be the only thing built on a swamp, so they went to Suzie's Hardware and declared what a nice place the shop was, and thus Suzie won't let you build on swamps.

But in all seriousness, you probably can't build on swamps because a Person of Authority thought that made sense while designing the system and just hasn't seen any reason to change it.

I wish you could build dwellings on water. No amazing underwater adventures? Such a missed opportunity.

Perhaps the correct answer is to produce two more building items... say a Foundation Kit for the Swamp that works like a stake, requires more material to build than a normal Place, and costs 500 cigs rather than 100.

For the water, you could offer a Houseboat Kit that costs even more material and 2,000 cigs.

That way, with such a great barrier to entry, the Places on the relatively few Swamp and Water squares would be rare (as they should be) and you'll notice when you see one... but if you want to recreate Final Fantasy I's Water Temple in the middle of the lake, you'll be able to.

Or instead, you can build a place so big, it has its own helipad, lake and lake temple, thus bypassing any arbitrary building restrictions.

Or use some sort teleportation technology. But Midgets still won't be able to sleep well at night. Which is actually why they're always so cranky.

*raises a hand* That would be sorta me?

Not that CAKE HQ has a helipad (why would that exist here of all place?) or a temple... but it does have an underground jungle, river access and some really odd old-stuff. All 'discovered' from long before pre-drive days. Gotta spend my time somehow right?

That said, building on swamp/water (with maybe an added item needed?) would be cool. So much wasted real-estate!!
