Subject: Nightmare Enthusiasts?

When I was browsing the Hall of Fame I noticed a new category - Nightmare Enthusiasts. Has anyone figured out to what this relates?

My first guess was Titan fighting, but I've fought a lot of titans in the last few days and nothing has registered, so it must be something else (well, it could be titan fighting and not be working, too).

Is there a fancy new mob and/or quest out there?

Yeah, I was kind of excited when I noticed the new thing in Pville, and then I took the time to keep count of the damage until about the time it topped 10k, and I figured this thing wasn't going to die. It's a neat feature, but not as neat as my imagination had created for me while I was fighting it.

Would like to add something very obvious:
Using the teleporter to end the fight, won't get your score into the hall.

It's a neat concept, facing your darkest nightmare, good for roleplayers, but I'm confused.
Why? What's the benefit?

What benefit?

You get a spot in the Hall of Fame. Isn't that enough for you?

True, there. But we need in-roleplay world justification. Why would one want to go there anyway?

There's no roleplay benefit (or tangible in-game benefit) that I can discern; the only actual benefit is to "power gamers" - much like fighting titans, it's a nice easy way to work up your fighting skill (except unlike titans, it costs you a ciggie and you can't walk away any time you want - and also unlike titans, there's no reward for your time).

The benefit is to give you guys something quick n' dirty that you can compete over while I do Boring Work That Will Take A Long Time. I'm rewriting the Items system, y'see, and it's possible I'll be doing that for a week or so and you'll have no new features in the meantime. So, here's something I knocked up in a couple of hours, to try to tide you over. Smile

Those of us with a certain competitive streak and/or bloodlust certainly appreciate it.

As a side note to the 6 people above me in the HoF: I hate you all. And I mean that in the nicest way possible Big Grin

I don't recommend this on Bastard Rank. Eek!

I should at least get a medallion.

CMJ, if you want to keep us appeased with minimal work, just add more medals - we like shinies!

How about:

streak of 50 perfect timings (did it once, the stars aligned with absolutely no lag or finger twitches, it'll never happen again!);
level 50/100/150 for Nightmare (got to 150, doubt I'll have the patience to do that again!);
Supreme Crate finder with a side of Brainzzz (more crate medals!);
bastard rank DK;
rk0 DK (medal can even have a sarcastic name!);
world traveller (entire map in 1 turn - although might take too many resources to track or entire map cumulatively);
top level (100) for reinforcement/insults/cooking/cleaning/all 5 building skills (possibly on the way medals as well, for either individual building skills or combined ones - e.g. level 75 logging/stonecutting could be "materials master", level 75 carpentry/masonry could be "master builder");
1 day DK;
50/100/150/200/250 DKs; and
100/250/500/1000 quest points (you can call the 1000 medal "the Deranged Derander".

I'm sure others have many similar suggestions.

Oh, I dunno. I've only tried it the once and managed to run up a respectable ranking in the HOF. Between my cluelessness and the Bastard run, I'm more than happy with the results.

"Why won't this mongrel die?"

"Uhoh... I'm running out of ammo..."

"What happens if I run?"

It's a nice way to show how mighty you are (but much under CMJ's Might) and a cig sink, yes. I do recall there were contestants asking for one of those, and there it is.

Also, it's sort of a testing ground for your munchkin-geared character, I'd guess. All that sweat and huffing from finger-tapping proves that Tyr's naked midget armed with only a sledgehammer can survive a B-rank Malfunctioning Robot.

No offence intended to Tyr and midgets. And the Bot.

Erm, yes.

I say no to more badges. I don't want to unleash the collector in me. Mr. Green

world traveller (entire map in 1 turn - although might take too many resources to track or entire map cumulatively);

I am not quite sure it is possible even as a Gobot. I know I tried (with robot/hyper day joker).

Nah, it wouldn't take that much in the way of resources. We know how many squares there are on the world map, so we just add the players' XYZ co-ordinates to an array and then count how many things are in that array.

BUT THAT GIVES ME AN EVEN BETTER IDEA!

Say we generate an array of 100 points at random on the map. And then we say "Right, player, go and hit all these points in this order." And then when someone hits all 100 points, we give them some shiny, and we throw away the array and generate a new one. And we call it the 100 Point Rally. And we do a 1,000 Point Rally too.

...This sounds like an excuse to buy a lot of steaks and a good mount.

And an interesting way to get some shiny. If you could make it competitive some how it would be even better.

Sounds fun - as long as you get updates as you go (or a distraction that lists all the points) - it would suck to get all that info on one screen and have to keep going back to something in game while you do the rally.

(Yes, in theory you could copy/paste to another program, but in-game tasks shouldn't require out-of-game resources, at least in my opinion.)

An interesting player-run event would be a Better Homes and Gardens scavenger hunt - instead of going to random points, players have to visit certain rooms in certain dwellings and report back on their finding.
