Okay, so this comes up in Project Wonderful as a potential.
Busty Girl Comics. Sounds like neckbeard territory, yeah, but it's more about the problems of having larger breasts.
This is a feminist comic, from the look of it, but how much of the audience is blokes who're just there for the boobs? Will advertising here bring us nice people, or not-so-nice people? Should I advertise on Busty Girl Comics or not?
EDIT: Should I give the author some money without advertising? That's another potential.

It's amusing, but it's all about real-life situations. Few of the people who respond to this comic strongly enough to bookmark it and read it regularly (even for the right reasons) are going to take to the weirdness that is the Island.
Whether it's nice or not-nice folks there, the click-through rate is likely to be low, the ones who aren't put off by the first paragraph of the Welcome page will be even fewer, and you'll lose nearly all of those at Corporal Punishment. People do have multiple modes, so you will get some, but it isn't a good bet.
If you just want to support the comic, go ahead, but if you're advertising to get new players who will love the Island and stick around, I say go for the comics with a wackier sense of humour.

CMJ, do you prioritize advertising on websites likely to be frequented by people into writing or roleplaying? I ask because I feel like I am seeing a lot more alts than actual new players. It seems rare to spot a rookie.

When I come across them, yes. I use Project Wonderful, which is really more webcomics-focussed, but anytime I come across a writey site I advertise on it. We get a very good clickthrough rate on creepypasta websites, for example.
My criteria for advertising on a webcomic site are pretty lax, as long as it's not outright hostile to anyone. I figure the Wall O' Text keeps out most folks with short attention spans.

We've advertised on Wondermark before. No joy. 
Click through rate of less than one in ten thousand, ending up costing like thirty cents a click. I don't know why; it seems like Wondermark and the Island would go together really well.

If I may be so bold- a webcomic that I just found recently that is deliciously bizarre and truly beautifully patient: Stupid Snake. It's about trolls, troll hunters, dwarfs, and some lady in a neck brace.
Also, a pretty damn ludicrous and informative review site that's pretty hardcore videogamer and roleplaying gamer: The Spoony Experiment.
Even if I may not be so bold, Either which way, good hunting Sir!

Have you seen Bearmageddon? It's like a zombie apocalypse, but with bears. It's also written and drawn by the elder half of the Axe Cop creative team.
The bearpocalypse just seems to kind of fit in your purview, somehow.

That is really disappointing! It sounds perfect. (Actually, I think I may have come from there... can't remember.) It might be because the absurd and steampunkish bits likely to draw in someone from Wondermark are past the Wall O' Text.
I actually don't see Island ads anywhere, and haven't since I joined, which is why I ask all these questions.

I can verify personally that Improbable Island does advertise with the Spoony Experiment, or at least it did once long ago.
That is, after all, what attracted a particular Cyclopian Frenchwoman into it's ranks. Funny that, as two month old as it is, I see this thread for the first time today. Yesterday this very thing came up in conversation with one CherrikiTen, though I can't remember the details. We've frequently spoken about the game, particularly lately with my -very- recent decision that it's time to make a comeback.
But yes, I've seen the ads on TSE, or at least I did some years back.

Along with The Spoony Experiment, you could try other members of Channel Awesome such as the Cinema Snob, Nostalgia Critic, anyone like that. While they do get some... hrm, possibly less than savouries visiting that site (which you are going to find anywhere. Let's be honest with ourselves people, it is the internet), their presentations are quirky, funnier than hell, and extremely intelligent.
I think if you want to find a site that caters to the kind of humor we get here on II, that would be a good place to look into as well

It's simply personal opinion when I say that the comics are boring and appear to only appeal to busty girls who can shake their head and say, "Too true, too true," but I think I'm being fairly objective in saying that I don't expect regular readers of something so "grounded" to likely also be a group of Islanders. We sit on three generations of old men and have lots of shitting, pissing, barfing tiny people.
Advertising there will get you no nice people, and no not-so-nice people. It's not a great place to advertise for the island, methinks.

Basic Instructions. They certainly have the "humor" down-pat, and occasionally go into the "wacky" with comics about super-heros. Moreover, they are, at the moment, rather needful of some advertisers.

For a while, they've been being sponsored by various sites, meaning those sites get all the ad space, but I admit I don't know whether that would solve the problems that you stated.

Buttersafe is a fantastic example of a place that has "our people". It's a good location to advertise. I actually came from the Dwarf Fortress forums--I think it was the developer's brother who linked to the front page of Improbable Island when there was a debate about the militant attitude against cigarettes. Improbable Island does NOT embrace a militant attitude against cigarettes.
