Subject: The Current Jobs List

I don't know if anyone else does this, but I like to set up a whole long list of jobs at once. I have learned very quickly that taking a break and then coming back to my long list of, say, just decorating jobs, can make it very hard to remember what the last job you set up was! The entire list just says "Decorating job for Undecorated Area" and that can be amazingly frustrating. Is there any way that the jobs list can reflect a room ID or page ID as well as the type of job? That way a whole list can be compiled without accidentally doing a job twice. (I have at least two doors I've built twice.)

PS: Is there any way we could get a tool, like a sledgehammer, from Suzies if we want to destroy something for, say, a return of supplies? Like, rent the destruction kit and as you break apart pages or rooms or doors you don't want you can get back a bit of wood and stone? It'd be nice to remove these doors from my exquisitely long list of doors because they confuse me sometimes. I may also have a few pages I don't need, too. It may just be me, though.

I would love to be able to break down extra doors and pages. One that's less a problem (doesn't show up in lists and need to be hid), but that I'd still like to be able to remove, is extra expansion spaces for sleeping spots - when making a long list of jobs I have made more of these than I intended almost every time I made them.

I would love it if everything showed all the relevant Page IDs and Room IDs and so on. I'm actually in the middle of composing a great long list of everywhere that they need to show up but don't, as a bug report - because there have been so many times when I've been in the middle of setting batches of build jobs and forgot whether I just selected the sixth Undecorated Area or the seventh, or where I was in the middle of setting parameters and I forget which page this particular program is attached to but I 'd have to go back several clicks to see.

I'd also like this. Even if it only gave back 10% of the materials, or even none at all. Yeah, we can hide unwanted doors, and lock off unwanted rooms, and leave unwanted slots unfurnished, and use unwanted pages from elsewhere with a Show Page or just as a "free" programming grid - but it'd be nice to not have them in the Master Settings list at all! That list is way too long already, even with the much-improved new layout.

And while we're dreaming, can we have an option to set the settings of all rooms/pages at once? Budd's comment reminded me of this - let's say you put banter in all of your rooms, and then decide you only want story chat. Unless I've missed something entirely, you then have to open up every room on the settings page and set banter to hide.

Yes. This would be totally awesome.

There are lots of things that would be awesome in bulk. I don't need them any more, but I would have really liked to set up 100 page builds off of the Docks in one go, instead of tediously counting and clicking and praying I didn't miss-count.

or even the 18 I did off of every freaking outdoor room for weather. Just having a way to set up multiple same-type same-place jobs at once would be lovely. You are about to set up X number of New Room Jobs is this okay? Yes, it is really okay. Super okay, in fact. And then adding wood and stone to them in the usual list. Or something.

Also: When doing a build job, are all the other build-states reconciled at the same time? Because I had what.. uh.. 73, I think, build jobs set up at one time, and the lag after every action was atrocious until I had cleared most of the list. I am talking super atrocious. Several minutes of lag, even.

And yes, Budd. I'd also be totally okay with a Demolish option even if it doesn't give me back a thing. Just to have all that extra crap off my Master Settings would leave me a happy girl. And also a good point about programming! I may or may not have three rooms in my Dwelling that go by the same name. I am not super awesome at programming, and it is hard enough without constantly forgetting what everything is.

Hell yeah. So, so, so awesome to be able to do things in bulk. Stonecutting, decorating, taking lessons - all those vastly improve the game, to me. Setting build jobs in bulk would be awesome - instead of the current
1. Set New Build Job
2. Add Page
3. Scroll down to find room you want
4. Click on it
5. Set another build job
6. = Goto 2, repeat ad nauseum
7. Lose count, but keep adding more because your notes said 18 and that looks like about 12ish
8. Swear
9. Find that you've added some to the wrong room
10. Swear again
11. Get RSI of the clicking fingers
12. Swear some more
13. Use ctrl-F to count how many you've set, find that it's the wrong number
14. Swear yet again
15. Try to delete the wrongly-set build jobs; rolldice to see if goto 9 or goto 13
16. Is that right? Ah, to hell with it, it's probably fine.
17. Construction time! Clickety clickety click.

etc... imagine a wonderful world, where it's just
1. Set New Build Job
2. Set Bulk New Pages
3. Select Room
4. Input number wanted
5. Confirm!
6. Do build jobs.
7. Dance with glee because it is so easy.
Also: When doing a build job, are all the other build-states reconciled at the same time? Lag, you say?

I set my build jobs in sets, once I've planned out a system for each room or room-feature. And, yep, I get serious lag too, even with sets of only about ten jobs. Not always several minutes, but usually enough time for me to be reading a book or browsing elsewhere between clicks. I made that graph a while ago, on an occasion when it was rather spectacularly laggy.

Edit: there's supposed to be an image there, under the "lag, you say?" link. It shows in the preview but not the actual post. Click through for a graph of lagginess.

With that shocking degree of lag, why continue to set up such large batches? Isn't it a lot faster to build each job as soon as you set it -- even taking into account that it's less efficient on the human end of the process?

Long lists have their attractions for me, too, but completing each room and door and page as I set it has two advantages:

1. Much less confusion, and
2. Each job finishes a whole lot faster.

So... fewer mistakes, less overall time, and I can test as I go with a walkthrough: "Good! that part does look the way I thought it would."

Even so, I'm in favour of always being able to see Page IDs and Room IDs -- especially when I happen to be deliberately using the same name for more than one location!

Wait, I think I'm interpreting the graph wrongly then. What does it mean to compare "number of clicks" to the seconds of lag it takes?

The "number of clicks" was in completing build jobs in the Current Build Jobs menu, not the whole "clicking around finishing each job as you set it" which Sessine suggests. So the "clicks" would have been "stonemasonry, carpentry, stonemasonry, carpentry, stonemasonry, carpentry" etc etc. That was when I was hurriedly rebuilding my house with a Barn Raiser, before rushing off to try and get Kind Tower at least partly back upright. I had already used a few Brews to get the initial constructions done and a few rooms made, so that I could set up lots of jobs ready to build them with the Barn Raiser ... because I had assumed that setting up the jobs ready for me to build with them when I was ready would save time as well as vastly reducing the amount of clicking (and therefore server load?) between menus.

Given this lag issue, Sessine's suggestion is sensible.

However, it assumes that people will only be setting build jobs when they are also there with lots of stamina and the building kits, intending to spend time doing construction. Not that they will be setting jobs them as they think of them, or as they write the descriptions, or as they bring enough Contraptions/ivances to program with the new Pages. I often lurk in my house creating build jobs, getting together a big enough batch that it is worth it to use a Brew, wind my stamina up to 400%, and get all three kits. For large buildings, combining the planning stage of setting build jobs with the working stage of building can be confusing. But then, combining the lag of a large set of build jobs with construction is frustrating.

A pity. I shall have to either wait while I build, or massively multiply my clickery.

Clearly I'm building again or I'd have nothing to kvetch about. But earlier on in this post a lot was said about keeping track of how many pages are being built to a room. Would it be possible to, say, have a room show a list of its existing pages, along with its under construction pages too? Like:

Diddler's Green (Room ID 8478)
-'First Visit' (Page ID 5082)
-'Enter from main' (Page ID 5083)
-'Ask Madame Lady where the Jokers are." (Page ID 5083)
-Unbuilt Page
-Unbuilt Page

That way you can still see after clicking "Add Page" What Pages are still on your list.

And Yes, Sessine's suggestion to just build as you go is awesome, but I think I said before, and if I didn't, well. Sometimes crap happens, like you've got absolutely no wood, but 3000 stone. Or perhaps you've got no ciggies, or maybe you've just forgotten that newday happened while you were tinkering about, and you went to the map, and now you've got no building doodads.

Or you just like the feeling of completing big lists.

Or you don't like clicking back to the current jobs list, even though the link is right there damnit, no, gotta make sure I've got all of these pages up then I'll build them yep.

And if I get lag again I will be sure to save the URL.

I'd like to throw my vote in for some form of "Delete" option on completed tasks. I've made 9 rooms and 8 doors just trying to get an idea to work, and having all that hidden from other players doesn't make it easier to manage as the builder.

I dunno exactly what you need here - I mean, if we do the build jobs to get the urls and lag times, then they're done and they're gone. And construction work doesn't have the usual &c=numbers section of the url, which I thought was a magic timestamp-counter thing to show what's happening ... but anyway, I'll just throw some urls in here, and hope.

This is great. I'll take a look and see if I can speed things up a bit.
