Well, this door would operate similarly to a Teleport beacon. You would insert a cig (or maybe a couple SP) and it would connect to a linked door in a place anywhere on the map. Let's say you want to make an underground passage between your bunker near NewHome and your vacation home near New Pitts, well now you can! If you have a friend that wants a portal from their house to your new store, well that can happen too! As long as each place has one of these doors available and they've been linked, then you're good to go!
There a couple possible ways to link doors. You could choose from a list of unlinked doors, this would send a notification to the owner of the second door, which they could choose to accept or decline. Or each door could be given a four digit door code. Each door owner would have to put the code of the door they wished to link in order to link the door. Jimmy's door code is 5555 in his parlor and Suzie's door code is 6666 in her kitchen. Jimmy would have to enter 6666 in the linking page and Suzie would have to enter 5555 into the linking page. Upon linking the doors, you can walk through the door in Jimmy's parlor and end up in Suzie's kitchen. You can also link to your own places.
I believe it'd be best to make this door cost SP to make up for the extra server load. Also, you'd only be able to exit where you came from. So hitting go back to map would take you to the square above your starting point. So if you go into a place at (5,13) go through a door to a place at (8,24) if you hit "go back to map" you will go back to (5,13). This is to prevent travel abuses.
Please voice your additional ideas and concerns here. I feel this idea has potential but needs a bit of refining!
That's correct FML, It is kinda like a Comms tent for places except you get full use of the place, you just can't use it to warp across the map.
Thank you guys for the support. Hopefully CMJ sees this and thinks of other ways to fix any bugs he may see in it. This would be a cool addition I would definitely use.
I'm 100% all for this because I have four places all on one square and the ability to story seamlessly between each of them would be amazing. Constructing a path that leads from one building to another to create a single environment is kind of a dream of mine.
It would also mean people could create "moving" places in a writing sense.
Also I mean frankly who wouldn't want a toilet that leads to another dimension.
We'd also need to stipulate that the player cannot take their backpack with them-- that is, that they can't pick up or drop items which affect game play.
However, that rule in place, I fully support this idea! It's super cool! It's been proposed in the past, but always shot down because it would obsolete the world map. To be honest I'm surprised no one has before thought of including the obvious rules patch you've suggested here, JonT. (No one to my knowledge, anyway.)
If my understanding of doors is correct, the server load of this idea would be negligible. However, I'd be fine with charging SP for it, as it doesn't alter game play.
Perhaps we should also consider extending this capability to "Warp to Room" contraptions. Additionally, it might make more sense to link magic doors to rooms, instead of other doors, but I'll leave those details to someone authoritative.
And, Sessine, I believe you are correct; JonT is proposing something like a comms tent, but with the additional functionality of interacting with the Place, entering different rooms, transferring MacGuffin mementos, etc.
I like the idea but I don't think that a SP cost is the way to go. Since these doors could be used to gain an advantage gameplay wise, this becomes a "pay to win" situation. Cigs would be a better choice. Sure you can buy them with SP but you don't have to.
That said I'd rather see the trains back if we're going to have interplaces travel available.
