Sure I get the lion -- sneaky kitty and the panthzer, but there are some that I can't get at all -- they get rated poorly by me for that same reason -- but that doesn't mean I'm not curious.

The Droogs are a reference to Clockwork Orange, from my searches on Wikipedia. They're certainly not an inside joke.

Most references on the island are to literature or british pop culture. I can only think of a few actual in jokes, and they don't appear until later levels.

Read Hitchhiker's Guide and you've got a whole pile of 'em; watch Monty Python and you've got another pile.

Most of the actual game in-jokes can be summed up as follows: rank 7 is really scary, Dan's quests are annoying, some people rp in bad taste, jokers are scary.

There's a few references to the comedian Eddie Izzard. Cake or Death is the title of a sketch about fundamentalism in the Church of England.

Don't have much problem understanding the monsters. The man eating Gazebo is from the Tale of the Dread Gazebo (my favorite story) while most fall under popular literature and Monty Python.

Though for the life of me, I can't figure out that 'Creature from a Dodgy Anime.' I'm not even sure what I'm looking at.

The British Bedstead Men, the London Omnibus, and the Gnu are all references to Flanders and Swann songs

The Midget plumber is a reference to the super Mario games, there's a lot of tie-ins there, but you don't have to realise this to enjoy it. It took me ages to work it out.

Jasper Fforde. Genius author. Writes really bizarre sci-fi comedy and satire (thus fitting in perfectly on the Island). I recommend his books muchly.

Back on subject. The Rind Flayer. For those of us who've ever played D&D, there was a creature called the 'mind flayer' which looked surprisingly like the rind flayer (or is it the otherway round). Didn't snack on citrus fruit rinds though as I recall.
