Forensic radiation tests had shown high doses of radioactive contamination on the clothes of a few victims.
The final verdict was that the group members all died because of a "compelling unknown force".

It's well-known, in some circles, that high levels of certain types of radiation can warp three- and four-dimensional continua, as if distance and time flowed in nonlinear ways. Obviously they died of radiation from the Chernobyl incident in advance of its actual occurrence.
