My last drive kill (43rd): it took two and a half 'days' to get to level two. The rest of the DK took three 'days'.
How about a higher likelihood of running into the Tattoo Mutant or the Magpie at level one for higher DK players, plus a more substantial experience bonus for defeating them?

I have noticed that it does take quite a bit longer for level one to go by, but I've been using all that extra time for big trouble hunting and for getting more req as fast as I can to get the better armor and weapons if I can. Even with screwing around building my house (and having 19 stone I hauled all the way to New Home stolen) I still have enough to advance after a few days. I don't know about at level 40 and above, but it has not bothered me yet at 34 DKs.

Something that really makes level 1's easier is, of course, overrun outposts. Really, really easy.
(No, of course I wouldn't exploit the stamina-free hunting for my own ridiculous aims. *cough*)
