I just thought that looked cumbersome in Cat-town...

Very Very Very large block of text. I thought the game was mocking me for a second.

Can we have the actual little commenting box above this block, like it used to be before (you know, the box just below all the other comments)? I find that having it below is a bit odd.

No, no deleting comments unless they're full of arse. We will use carrots, not sticks.

If someone wants to write up a new FAQ in the Wiki, perhaps one that mentions Location Four, go for it.

Meanwhile, I'll see if I can restrict comments to Location Four only, for the Rookie's first game day.

There is a new FAQ. I've been pointing people toward it.

I've just seen the new 'find old chat' device. Very nice. I was going to observe that there's a surprisingly large amount of old chat, but I see that that has already been noted. This is what comes of having literate players Dan. This is just in the what? First two weeks? What's a years worth going to be like? (Does quick mental calculation) approximately, shit loads.

As far as actual display is concerned... Do it like Google. Show the previous ten pages as numbers, then provide links to go back (and later, forward) by ten, with a range of twenty clickable page numbers displayed.

The larger problem is that so much of that discourse is utterly inane. But... that problem's not solvable with software.

There USED to be that block that only let you post when you had clicked the faq link. Maybe if it only would let you post once you had clicked, say, all of the Basic Training's pages save for the shouting? (I am aware of the RP-Alt problem with that, but it's really not that much work to click through all of them.) Clicked links coloured, for an exception, so that one can tell which pages they have already seen.

Restriction to Location4 for the first day - sounds good to me. We could test it for some days, then maybe filter out the Really Frequently Asked Questions.

Edit:

CMJ, if you just attempted to move the chatbox, then it didn't really work for me. Box and the page numbers are next to each other now.

Editedit:

If it's supposed to look like that - it's a little weird, but I can live with that.

Right, with it now just off to the side I feel that it's much easier to navigate and comment. Thanks on that one, but can I have one more thing? Could you put the refresh button back under the comment box like it used to be? Or perhaps add one there?

Edit:

YES.

With how it is right now, side by side and the refresh right there, I can see this working beautifully. Thank you, Dan.

A compromise - it's above the number grid, on the right.

Now if the unseen pages were... orange maybe and the ones already seen were as they are now, brownishred, then I'm utterly happy.

Impossible, I'm afraid. See the &c in the query string? That's basically how the nav system works - it's kinda like a timestamp, that serves to tell the game what navs you're allowed to use (so you can't just go to improbableisland.com/dragon.php and win).

How did the First Unseen link work, then?

Also, signal to noise ratio remains a problem -- what can we do about that?

I think getting this bit about the comments sorted out first is a little more important...

First Unseen, from what I can gather, jumped you to a point in time just after you made your last comment. However, I believe it was designed back in the day when LotGD servers would have just one village and one chatspace - it doesn't record your last comment for individual areas. So, not too useful for our server. Smile

Signal to Noise - we confine the Rookies to the Fourth Wall until they read a brief etiquette guide.
Server performance - I'm gonna code up some "storm shelters" in each outpost. A simple page without any hooks, like the Fourth Wall except unique to each village, where folks can go to chat when the village chat gets a bit too slow.

..Staring at the chatspace now -- can we, in addition to the current fix.. re-add the option to go one page forward and one page back, as before?

Left and right of the Refresh?

Storm Shelters. Mr. Green If there's a hailstorm of Rookies, just baricade up and man the harpoons. Hee.

More signal-to-noise thoughts - we could extend the Funny-Looking-Rock to all Outposts, too.

I can see that leading to quite a number of comments a la

"OOH SO THAT'S WHAT THE ROCK IS FOR" comments... But I like to think most of the noise comes from Rooks, so maybe that evens that out.

Hardly anyone uses the Veteran's Club except as a novelty, though. That's not a place to talk or roleplay, and it excludes people who are clever and articulate but haven't made their first DK -- or alternate characters, who probably won't be used to even make a single DK.

I think gently raising the bar of entry to the chatspaces is a better way to go. Getting people to read the FAQ and barring them to Location Four for their first day will help, but it will not improve quality, and we have seen a significant increase in people flailing and spamming or just posting 'wtf,' significantly on the Failboat. Making it a little trickier for people to activate chat will weed out the people who are inclined to post, as Sessine says, inane things. More people being clever and chatty will attract more people to be clever and chatty; we will have people chatting who Want to chat, instead of people who are given the right immediately to chat.

It should not be hard to earn the privilege. But, you should have to go a bit out of your way to do it.

People being stupid will just encourage more stupidity, as it sets the, 'alright, this is the norm for this chatspace and this is how you fit in' precedent.
