Part of the research the WCG is doing is for producing hardier, more weather- and disease- resistant rice. The purpose of that research is so that grain shortages will become fewer in the future and impoverished populations will still be able to eat. This is a good thing.

However, thousands of people world-wide are dying from starvation every day. This is a bad thing. It really sucks, actually. And since we're responsible citizens of the world who have enough time on our hands and resources to sit on our butts in front of a computer screen to play a browser-based text game and enough spare cycles to have given 178 years, 313 days, and 2 hours of super-computer research for the betterment of the world (we are AWESOME), I thought maybe we could use some of our spare brain cycles to put real rice in real tummies.

Here's how it works: For every correct answer you give on the subject of your choice, the sponsors at Free Rice donate the money for ten grains of rice. There are no pop-ups and no emails, it doesn't even ask you for your name. It's just a way to challenge your vocabulary (in multiple languages!) or your knowledge of this, that or other, and do something good while you're at it.

With the amount of people we've got that are willing and able to spend butloads of time on seemingly insignificant tasks? About five minutes..

Has a group been created yet?

If you want to join, there's the link. Groups can be hard to find on there.

For the reassurace of the cynical ... I did some research on the Free Rice thing some time ago, and it is 'legit'.

The site and its donations can be verified somewhere in the UN - World Food Program's web site. I can't remember exactly where, but will hunt it down if anyone asks. (Actually, I think I might have mentioned it right here in the forum 6 - 9 months ago, so it might be easier to find than it was first time.)

Didn't know about the 'teams' thing back then. I'm off to sign up. Big Grin

D.

PS at the time I also calculated the 'amount' of Free Rice needed to actually provide a complete meal.(Based on the WFP's stated calorific needs to avoid starvation.) I'll see if I can dig it up, but I remember it was only about 15 minutes of effort.

From the Free Rice FAQ:

In countries where rice is a staple part of the diet, World Food Programme provides, on average about 400 grams of rice per person, per day (for families, including children and adults). That is intended for two meals that include other ingredients to ensure a minimum of 2,100 kilocalories per day.
There are about 48 grains of rice in a gram.

So, 5 answered questions = roughly a gram of rice.
400 grams of rice = 19,200 grains.
1,920 questions answered = a person's daily allotment of rice.

Hmmm ... more than I thought ... so much for my memory.

Still ... that's for 2 meals ... so 960 questions per meal. Now I just need to time myself over 960 questions.

It's still not a big ask. Smile

I did it in about 25 minutes while finishing up getting ready for work. So probably 15 minutes without distractions?

Their 'groups' facility is apparently brand new, less than a month old... still very buggy. Individuals show up on the 'groups' listing as a group with 2 members, and though Reverb's group exists and shows who has signed up, it isn't displaying any of our numbers.

Presumably this will be fixed. And people are still being fed, whether the web site credits our efforts to the group or not. **grin** It's not like we're a crew that's going to be put off by a few bugs!

Bah. We eat bugs for breakfast. Well, they do in Squat Hole, anyway.

I figured the group might be similar to how the WCG updates your totals; once per day. We'll see, what we'll see.

My calculator and I did some adding. Among the 18 people who have joined our group so far, we have earned 55,850 grains of rice for the hungry.

That's the daily allotment of rice for almost three people.

And Haccadine, you totally rock. Hacc had 19,200 alone.

I used to have a bot that I would run every day that would answer the questions automatically that I got from a friend, but after about a month, that stopped working, and after that, I just kinda forgot about the free rice vocab thing. Nice to see it's still going though.

I'm coming a little late to the discussion. Exactly what are we feeding the hungry to?

For those who are participating in the group thing:

It seems that to have your grains count to the group, you need to select 'Play' from the group ... window, thingy. So when you log in, click on 'Goups', open the BRAAAAINS for GRAAAINS group, and you'll see a Play button over on the right. It takes a day (or so) for the grains to be credited to the group stats.

No big deal if you forget, the grains are still going where they should.

On another tack, I might be candidate for the "You've played to much Imp Island" club ...

I saw Gnu = Wilderbeest and thought "they're going to sue".

I saw Bug = ? and thought "Ferryn".
