How's a man supposed to get over a cold in America?
And why, when I search for an appropriate snotty smiley, do I get pictures of guys' butts?

Well, can't answer for Americans, but up here in Canada, if I get a cold, I take ColdFX, and drink a nice, hot NeoCitrin.
As for the second part... I have no clue, bud.

1- I usually go with Nyquil, Mucinex DM, Ibuprofen, and Emergen-C. You'll either be better, or so zonked out of your gourd you won't even care.
2-Because you can't search for anything without getting butts.

S'true. You don't know how annoying it was for me when I was trying to look up pictures of the African Wild Ass for a science report...and when I was looking up photos of the Magna Carta...and when I needed a recipe for a good chicken marinade.
I make the many models of a mutant individual. To make them I use vegetables, animals, and minerals. From robot bugs to zombie bears to many singing barnacles.

Man, what's happened to chicken soup?
Also, here, in this overconservative country. We get only SFW Internet. So instead of seeing butts. As many would, I only get stuff like http://puu.sh/inf
Yes, that's a hint. Somebody add that to their dwelling already!

I've found, for myself, that the Nyquil medicine doesn't work for me, but Dayquil does. Combination of Dayquil and Mucinex works wonders. And some menthol cough drops for the interim. There's another medicine I used to take for colds, but I can't remember for the life of me what it is...used to get it at (of all places) the gas station by where I used to work, so many years ago.

I tough it out.
Okay, that is stupid. But it's mostly true.
Usually I just get some sleep or I take some Advil if I get a pressure headache. But other than that, I just live with it.
IF THE THINGS GET BAD AND BECOME BAD THINGS:
Drink Sprite/7-up/ or Serria Mist. Eat crackers and have chicken noodle soup.
If you get barfy, introduce yourself to your newest and most bestest friend: Mr. Bucket.
Also, Zicam has little q-tips that you can coat some lovely slime on and shove said slime and said q-tips UP YOUR NOSE. Wiggle it around in there and it can cut down on your fiendish cold.
Also also, on a funnier and non-serious note, swamp voodoo works. Find a gator's eye, mash it up, and dribble it in your ears.
Eye of newt does not work. That's also for witches. DO NOT BE CONFUSED.

Rules 34 and possibly, 35 of the Internet.
If my memory serves.
However, by "Internet rules", rule 30 would render me without existence here. Sad rule, that.

To get over a cold, my family brews cat's claw tea in about a 50/50 mixture with mint tea (peppermint works best. It's tingly!). Anti-viral properties on both of them. We drink about a pot a day during cold and flu season, and it helps you get over it if you have it and helps you never get it if you don't.
I've gone to school in years past and there were drippy noses and misery all around me...and I was healthy as a horse. Without the appropriate vaccines.
CMJ, you're in PA, right? So you're in the same state as my non-RenFaire supplier (I normally get my stuff at RenFaire, but Rain Bear is good, too). And she has other medicinal teas. They work.

UPDATE: the infection has reached my ears. Now I'm falling over. I feel like I'm on my way home from the pub. It's hilarious. Well, not to me, but y'know.

try aleve-d. if you can get it in the aisles of the drug store it isn't strong enough, they keep the good stuff behind the counter.
...same as hard liquor, actually.

According to Wikipedia, Lemsip uses similar ingredients to what's known in the US as TheraFlu, in Canada as NeoCitran. So if you're looking for the old-familiar, TheraFlu is probably the nearest equivalent you can find.
While Emily's at the drugstore, have her ask for "Fisherman's Friend" lozenges. These are cough drops on steroids. They will bust into your sinuses, kick ass, take names, and clear the room. When you start disliking the strong menthol-eucalyptus taste more than you like having your sinuses cleared, that means you're on the road to recovery and can stop using them.

I usually take sudafed. It's the best over the counter thing for anything sinus. From suffering from chronic sinus infections, it's what my doctors have all told me over the years.
However, I have strep throat, so... -stakes amoxicillin-
If it's in infection, ya'might want to try those two.

Oh man, Fisherman's Friend are the miracle cough drop. And they come in different flavours. Cherry even! Though original does the best at turning your nose into a fountain. (And it will.)
Also, NeoCitran is a very good thing for colds and sore throats. Though if it's your nose that's the problem, Vick's might do the trick too. A spot of that on your chest, and you're nose will be clear before you know it.
You can toast them, but it's dark magic. - MotPax on hotdog buns.

All of you and your fancy ways. My advice is: Coupla paracetamol (they have those there, Shirley?) to keep the fever down, and some high-powered 1000x RDA vitamin C fizzy tablets to zhush you up somewhat.

Paracetamol is the same thing as Acetaminophen (tylenol). Personally I've found that ibuprophen (advil) works a little better, and is less likely to upset my stomach. I second the fisherman's friend to clear out every air passage you've got...and they come in sugar free too. Earl Grey tea helps a surprising amount too.
If you've gone to the dry cough stage, switch to ricola cough drops, or head to an herbalist and get some cold tea with hyssop, horehound, and spearmint.

... I pretty much mainline vitamin C. chewable tablets, fizzy berocca / rexadon sodium tablets, orange juice by the litre. I have no advice but keep yourself warm, get lots of fluids, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
... colds and some flus, anyway. Anything else and it kicks into Chinese Medicine time. All sorts of the most bizarre pills and the worst-tasting brews you've ever had in your life, but they work miracles. And oh god, there's this Chinese cough medicine- nin jom pei pa- and it tastes delicious ((the one exception to the rule, evidently.)), and I think it's helpful but I've never noticed because I've been too busy pigging out on the deliciousness of it.
But yes. I have no idea what your chinese apothecaries are like there, so... hydrate. Hydratehydratehydrate. Sleep lots. Lots and lots. Vitamin C.

last time I had a cold, it was really bad, I was suffering at work and, one of my co workers gave me a pill he said was ibuprofen, but knowing him it may have been something stronger, and of questionable legality, after work I went to the local drug store and got nyquil, zycam and high pulp orange juice. when I got home I took the appropriate doses, and a glass of orange juice. I passed out on the couch and woke up 16 hours later after what may have been the best sleep I have had in my life, feeling almost back to normal
so if you want to get better fast, zycam, nyquil, high pulp orange juice, and "ibuprofen"( any painkiller will do I guess)

Aside from the usual medicines, you could try to work onions and garlic into your foods. They (and probably some other foods that I can't recall at the moment) have antiseptic enzymes that your body can use to attack things growing inside of you.
Also I've learned that any sort of infection atop a mucus membrane is helped immensely by just getting that stuff out of there... so hot peppers and ginger root and such are useful as well. Just don't go for something so hot that you asphyxiate yourself with a swollen throat and all.
