Ladies and gentlemen, beings of any other gender, or genderlessness doodads,
May I present to you:
The Improbable Island Raw Charm Calculator:
A Research by Maniak and DDR.
Using the discount given on the chainsaw in Sheila's Shack O' Shiny to exactly calculate your raw charm.
The goal of the research was to give your vague sense of charm a hard number.
We have succeeded.
In Improbable Island tradition, we have a googledoc, and the obligatory tinyurl. Marvel at it at: http://tinyurl.com/ii-charm
Instructions for those that need them: In column C is the price you pay for a chainsaw. In column B is your charm. In column D is your discount in req, column E shows your discount in percentages. The rest of it is just pretty data and charts. There is some very interesting stuff in there.
And, also as an Island first, we also have a direct download for those that wish to play with the data on their own computer both in Excel format and OpenOffice format:
xls: http://www.4shared.com/document/ReSMHHJr/Raw_Charm_Calculator.html
ods: http://www.4shared.com/file/T2sgnFRS/Raw_Charm_Calculator.html
effayque:
Q. Is it accurate?
A. I did my best to calculate and verify all the data. I do not believe there is any step missing.
Q. Why a chainsaw?
A. It's the most expensive weapon available for all DK levels.
Q. Does the charm also apply to the cigarette cost?
A. Yes.
Q. Did you crack the charm formula?
A. No. I'm not a math-head. If anyone can, the data is available. Please have a go at it.
Q. What's the practical use of all this?
A. Well, I hope someone can crack the formula or make an extension. Other than that, it changes the vague description given in the PSK to something tangible.
Q. Are there any improvements to be made to it?
A. Ofcourse. First, we don't have the formula. Second, we didn't calculate how much charm influences the price Sheila gives for your old weapon. I suspect it's a steady 70% value like eBoy but keeping track didn't occur to me. Third, it could be done with a weapon with a more round value to prevent rounding errors.
Q. How do I get pretty?
A. There are about 9 ways to gain charm, that I know of. Scroll to the bottom of the doc. I have a sneaky suspicion there are more.
Q. Now you have all that, what are you gonna do with all that charm?
A. Marry Emily and topple the Skronky Pot!
Special thanks to DDR for helping me.

This actually is pretty helpful in the way that it tells you just how much "5 charm" is worth. A lot less than I'd thought, apparently!

I want to, for the medal. But... all of my charm. ;_;

But can't it be in a normal link? You know; since my government censors the site. I absolutely can't access TinyURL links -- Legally, that is. And it's too much of a pain to get a VPN or a proxy here. They're also censored.

Your government censors TinyURL but not Improbable Island?
(I know for a fact that we're banned in at least two countries)
And yes, folks, URL obfuscators suck, for many, many reasons.

I would honestly love to see how high my Charm is. Not to boast, but to just see how BLOODY RIDICULOUS IT IS.

Yes. You see, ImprobableIsland is a text game. It's work-friendly, and it does not violate the government's censor standards.
While on the other hand, TinyURL can be used to exploit the filter used to censor sites. (Because it's just not programmed that well.) And therefore is technically considered an outlet to any censored site, just like a proxy site.

I'm curious which ones...
And URL obfuscating sites do suck, but they can be handy from time to time.
Isn't sanity just a one-trick pony anyway? All you get is one trick: rational thinking.
But when you're good and crazy, oooh, oooh, the sky's the limit.

Budget Horse's tail -100 charm
Bunny suit with SPH -35 charm
Mr. Noseybonk mask -25 charm
That's -160 charm. If you still get 25% discount with that, you've been hoarding your charm for too long. Time to get a medal or marry Emily. I'm sure the Chapel will be back by the time you reach 10% discount.
About 4% (200) of all players actually get the max discount.

I'm quite happy with having the highest Charm rating on the island, actually. ;>
My elephant guns are a bit over 400k instead of 600k-something.
I'm pretty sure it's over 160.

I think the main reason they're used so prevalently here is the character limit in Commentary. Plus the 'find the spaces' game.
While the former isn't really something we can solve without simply increasing the character limit, the latter has a suggested solution that is currently in testing.
