Here's the thread for the new quest in which we can talk about SPOILERS.

...so, who figured out that the real message was in the codes? Wink

I did! It took me a bit, because I was just chugging away at figuring out the main letter with a substitution program, I didn't even think to look at the cypher. VERY well done, by the way.

It was about a bunny rabbit's journey through Candy Cane Mountain, right?

I thought that it pretty much told you that the first time you visited Mr Stern. Mind you I'd already thought that it looked a bit...interesting. I just hadn't quite worked it out because I was working out the decoding substitution rather than the encoding one.

Good stuff.

Has anybody gotten past the whole "Monster" bit?
OR is that the end of it...

I thought it had something to do with it (they practically tell you) but I failed to pay attention to it at all once I started solving things. Not done yet so maybe I'll get the jist by the end.

I couldn't understand the first Key, or rather, I didn't know what it meant. The second Key gave it away though, and the third clinched it. On the last key, I knew what it was going to be, but I was ready for a twist, like Mr. Stern really had misunderstood and another character was going to be dragged into it, heh.

But, yes, I'm really interested to know if there's more hidden away somewhere....

Oh, and the letters themselves were very fun!

Yes, I liked the letters as well. If someone was to write a jungle encounter involving the osprey thingumy, someone who has better skills than I at writing such things. then that would be a nice little bit of cross referencing.

I want to know what happened to the last messenger; did s/he try blackmailing them and quietly disappeared? Eek!

Since this is the Spoilers thread ... here is the googledoc with the whole quest logged (and the letters translated, and the ciphers) - or at least as far as I've got.

Where does it go from here? Eagerly awaiting further developments!

Yes, like some of the others I was expecting the real message to be there, as I figured that was the point of the ZEBRADFGH (whatever it was) being laid out.

What I did find though was using the web apps on the later messages to do the transpositions messed those up. Perhaps I was entering them the wrong way (changing code to alphabet instead of alphabet to code or the other way around) but it translated the message while giving me an... alphabetic inverse (?) ... of the cipher. Fixed it by using the translated message to reverse engineer the cipher.

I was surprised by Stern's reaction to CP's message, when he says, relieved, that he knew that all was well because CP's message started with Havelock, and (paraphrasing) 'the word love is in Havelock'. Was this a red herring? Was it a consolation prize for those who hadn't found the hidden messages? Or is there a whole other level of coded messages going on? Might have to revisit that.

But I enjoyed it nonetheless. Boffo ... well done, that.

D.

I say: either one of them is not how we think they are or -that's an hypothesis of mine- there'll be one more patient in Doc Paprika's list.

Unless I stared too deep into the last conversation with Havelock?

Yes, I have a dream, of electronic sheeps and linen bedsheets. But that's not the point. Or isn't it?

Or, as is perfectly reasonable, they're both how we think they are, and they've just...found each other...

what, you didn't realize XKCD wasn't just a humor webcomic?

Isn't sanity just a one-trick pony anyway? All you get is one trick: rational thinking. But when you're good and crazy, oooh, oooh, the sky's the limit.

That was my interpretation, too. I even went up there to see if the quest line continued.
