Late last year, some of us got involved in the Freerice project. You can go back to that forum discussion here

Then Christmas came along and New year and all that stuff, and we all sort of drifted off. So, here's a thought.

For every 1000 grains the Improbable Island group raises until the end of October, I'll chuck a buck into CMJ's coffers. (I'll have to stipulate a max I guess, of say $50 per week, or I'll be broke as well) If anyone esle wants to match or add to that, come on board, you're very welcome. I figure I'll tally them up weekly, record the tally here, and make the donation.

To join in, go to freerice.com and sign up. Then search for and join the Improbable Island group.

Now, what is easy to forget, is that every time, BEFORE you put in your 15 minutes or whatever on Freerice, you need to log in, AND go to the group page, and click "play" from there, otherwise your efforts aren't recorded against the team stats.

As mentioned in the previous thread, I have found confirmation on the UN WFP web site that the Freerice program is legit and does donate proceeds to the WFP. (In fact, as I understand it, the guy that created the Freerice web site gave the whole shebang to the WFP.) I would suggest that you don't use the Failbook freerice app/portal though, cause they seem to have tampered with the donation ratio.

As of right now, the figure is 97 760. I'll update this next week.

So, there ya go.

If anyone has any difficulty signing in or whatever, let me know and I'll talk you through it.

Just one more stipulation ... no cheaty bots to do the work. You gotta answer the questions yourself. (You can look the answers up in reference material, that's fine, but no automation.)

D.

I think I love you, Daedalus. I had forgotten how much fun FreeRice is.

Memo to other players - turn off your Adblocker. That's how they get the money to donate rice.

So end of week 1, and the current score is 112,600.

The increase is 14840, which I'll round up to 15000.

Donation of US$15.00 done. Paypal transaction#9XV55928P09308058.

C'mon on you lot ... you're not trying hard enough!

All right, I'm game.

Every time Daedalus donates and updates this post, I'll match his donation thrice in terms of Extends and Crate Drops. He donates a tenner, I'll put the Extend bar up by thirty bucks and drop $30 worth of Crates on the Map.

Eek!

Oh my ...

It seems my little idea has grown bigger than Ben Hur. (Ben Hurian? Ben Hurish?) Bigger than I expected, anyway.

(furtively checks wallet). (insert image of moths flying out).

Yep, we're good. Bring it on.

And "thanks" to all participants!

For those who find they want a change of pace/more of a challenge:

Freerice in French, Spanish, and Italian!

It's all under the same account. Just make sure that you play through the group page each time.

Enjoy!

As an American, I found the Flags of the World and the World Capital ones highly educational. Also, I'm learning basic German words it seems. I really should do Spanish...

So ... end of week 2. Let's have a looks see.

Eek!

The score is 236,910 so this week's increase is 124,310. That's more than we did in all of 2010.

When I kicked this off I didn't think you lot would do anything like this sort of number. But I put a max on 'just in case'. Well you blew past that like it wasn't there. Which in a way I guess it isn't. There, for you. Wait, I'm getting all existential.

Anyway, as much I'd love to not have a max, my situation is such that it has to be. But, as I said up at the start, if anyone else wants to sponsor the second $50, that'd be fine by me! (i.e. I cover the first 50,000, someone else covers the second (or part thereof) and so on.) Clearly CMJ's amazing reward would have a limit as well, or the Island's economy will go haywire.

Anyways ... $50 goes in CMJ's donation box. Paypal transaction #88G45064426349012, done 15 minutes ago.

Tune in next week for more surprising numbers.

D.

Special Extend active! Daedalus's Donation Doubled!

(I doubled Daedalus' donation, and gave the other $100 worth of points to myself, which triggers the map drop and extendness)

Yuppers. Probably not to the same extent as yours, though. Laughing Out Loud

So ... week ... what are we up to? ... three. And the new number is ... 305,930.

Increase is ... 69,020.

So, another fiddy in the kitty. Paypal transaction # 9UB92999SA564381P. About 45 seconds ago.

I'm in. Needed to brush up on my Spanish anyway.

I'm gonna try to make it so that I donate at least 1000 grains every day. 100 questions took maybe 10 minutes at the most, so it's definitely doable.

Week 4

Running total is ... 327,960.
This weeks effort = 22,030

So, this is a bit odd. Your collective efforts have dropped by about two thirds compared to week 3. I could see this emerging as the week went on, and I've been scratching my head a bit. Law of diminishing return? Pareto principle? The Freerice site has a short appeal half life? I'd be curious to hear from you on why you've been less active, if it's something about the process.

Anyways, the number is what it is.

I couldn't bring myself to make a payment with 3 cents on the end, so I rounded it up to $23. Paypal transaction #0U879206S2026930H done 5 minutes ago.

yakkity yak

For me, it's because the site's seeming more buggy by the day. It switches subjects halfway through a session, logs me out, or resets me at level 1 with no donations... I know my info isn't getting lost, because after a few minutes it'll jump back up. It's as though the site is keeping two totals on me and jumping between them, so I have no idea any more how much I'm donating.

Anyone else, or am I just unlucky?
