What do you think of putting contraption and contrivances in mementos? Of course nothing that effects the game, but there's a lot of stuff that could be done. e.g. I would love to create a pair of dice that you could roll.
Edit: Opps wrong forum, could someone move it for me?

Ooh.
You're a fucking genius.
(how come I didn't think of that?)
Now the question is how, and to what extent...

Mayhaps have the ability to unlock specific doors through said mementoes, without the need for a program in the place? Increment memories, thoughts, etc? Mayhaps have certain types do different things when you 'use' them? It'd need to be a contained program just like in a Place, for thinks like random dice rolls, or have it redirect to a specific place or places, for things like saving in an rpg-like Place, without the use of twenty billion memories.

Personally... I think having mementos have programs which can be enacted and used in any place could be useful for quick and easy data transfer between places. Of course, having it defer to a single place is also practical too... hmmm...

Have mementos interact with places.... I like it. I hadn't thought of that.

Well, we can already do that with the If Player Has Memento Contrivance. I think your idea has more potential.
The fun thing about Mementos is that they use my Item system. In Items, any stat can be assigned to any item, anywhere, at any time. So we could do things like, oh, I don't know...
Keep track of how many times a Memento is "used," and have the description change as it "wears out."
Keep track of how long it's been since the Memento was made, and change its description so that it becomes stranger or more powerful as it matures.
Keep track of how many players the Memento has been passed around, and change its description so that it's more loved.
Alter the Memento's description based on the Item Context, so it could do something different in an Outpost than in, say, the Jungle. (the Item Context feature is what makes it possible for items to do different things in different circumstances; for example, the Monster Repellent Spray being both an offensive and defensive item depending on where and how you use it)
That kind of thing.

Is this still a thing? If so, would it be possible to be able to embed memories into mementos? I'm starting to build a Place at the moment, and I'd like to be able to make it interact with other Places. At the moment, this can only be done with mementos, which currently can only transfer the binary information have/don't have. Having a memory in it would enable far more interesting interactions.

Contraptions and contrivances that work for mementos as is:
Contrivances:
All Race and Gender Checkers
Drive Kill fewer/more/exact
Memory Related
Pass Through
Clan
Dice Roll
Weather
Time Range
Contraptions:
Page Lighter/darker/darkest
Tree Shadows
Rain/Heavy rain
Set Memory
Increment Memory
New contraptions and contrivances that need to be created:
Change memento description
Display use text
How long it has been since creation
How long it has been since last use
How many people have a memento from the same mold
Possibly, needs further discussion:
Commentary Command match/Partial match
Memento Related
New, to display more link than 'use'
Would not work/not needed with mementos:
Previous Room
Clear Story
Clear Banter
All room related
Take Memento
Give Memento
Enable Debug Mode
Stop All Programs
How I envision this working is when creating a memento you have an option to add a program, (cost more SP?) then before you give it away you would head to the scrap yard and add contraptions and contrivances to it.

If it's still a thing, I'd guess it's a back burner/season three kind of thing? Lots and lots and lots to do and CMJ's got a job on the plate now too. I'd just keep fingers crossed that it'll be a feature at some point.

From what we know so far (there are tidbits spread around the forum), CMJ has developed a story (or at least an outline), a new battle system with working alpha, a framework for alts and mains, new races, and new skills. As for the release date, Season 3 is always "a year away" every time it's mentioned. ::shrug::

I just read this for the first time and holy shit this is a creative wet dream. I love this idea so much, especially as someone who very much likes making mementos for "customers" of my character. I would love to be able to program it to be able to be worn down and stuff as it's used. That'd be amazing. This is a really awesome idea that I really hope gets pushed into reality, even if it takes a while for it to actually happen.

So CMJ.... any chance of this happening anytime soonish? I know you're working on lots of really exciting things... and I don't mean to be pushy. I would just be very excited to able to program mementos. Plus with the new server maybe performance issues from adding more contraptions won't be a thing. One things for sure, if this was implemented I would spend a lot more money on the island
