I'm not a marketer, by training or by temperament. Not even a little bit. But, having guided the great big card project to completion despite not being either an artist or an art director by training or temperament either, I feel some sort of obligation to all the people who contributed to make sure that those who would want to buy it, 1. know about the decks, and 2. are reminded of them sufficiently often that they actually do buy.

So I'm going to do the same thing I did to make the deck in the first place -- I am going to ask for help.

We have lots of players who love the Island. Some of them may actually know something about how to do this! Or they may know someone who knows. I'm putting out a call here for ideas.

If you're reading this, and you have some thoughts, post them!

And, more than that... talk to others -- in Banter, via external chat, around the dinner table, whatever. Help me figure out how to get these cards into the hands of people who will love having them.

Not a marketeer either, but getting people familiar with a five suit game might help. So offer a version of showdown (Poker with a fixed ante and no betting) using the deck in Common Ground for a while.

Great idea! Go for it!

No, I mean seriously -- that's a fantastic idea. By all means use the deck in RP, for any Joker games you want to play. You, and anyone else who wants to. Go nuts with it. I'll put the card ranks and names into the Wiki so everyone can know what they are.

Edit: And now they're in the Wiki! Right here.

Man, now I wish Improbable Labs was still an option... maybe I can do something with Place Programming...

Ooooooooohhhh, this gives me an idea! I have been meaning to come up with some actual games for my casino out in the jungle... >.> Would you mind terribly if I attempted to program one using this card scheme? We could even exchange notes! (And this gives me something to do over the long weekend coming up Big Grin)

As for marketing ideas, would it be possible for CMJ to include a mention in the banner ads he uses on Project Wonderful? "I made a game where you get eaten by lions. And there's a card game to go with it." or something. ^^;

Something something unintelligible gibberish something.

That would be utterly excellent! The more people are creating things with the Mighty Magpie cards, anywhere on the Island, the better.

I don't know that my own Place Programming skills are up to creating an actual, playable card-game program, so I applaud anyone willing to tackle that! I am definitely not one of the Island experts.

There may be some more modest thing I can do; I am still mulling my options over.

Trowa,
I'm putting together an external program for Showdown (see post #2). I'll be happy to send you a copy in one of the higher-level languages instead of a script. Are you conversant with any of these; if so, which (for broad compatibility, a version of C would probably be best)?

You can distract me (Sammi, currently Civilian) or use internet e-mail Sargent-in-Rockford@PeoplePC.com.

Not a marketer, but I've had a couple of thoughts to throw out.
1) I'm sure that there are a lot of old Islanders who no longer visit as often as they used to but who would still love a deck. Any ideas how to reach them? If there's anybody who knows such a person, then let them know! If you haven't chatted in a while, then here's the perfect excuse!
2) The cost of shippage to over here in Europe is extortionate. There was talk in the old thread of somebody doing a bulk purchase and then sharing them out. Is anybody up for doing this?
